Stephon Jamaal Dorsey (Understudy – Pharus) is a Detroit based multimedia artist whose work spans across many different mediums, most notably in live performance, music, and sound design. His debut music project Melanin is a 15-track portrait that cycles through themes of Blackness, nostalgia and healing. It landed him a spot in City Arts’ Best New Artist 2017 issue, and on the first Upstream Music Festival stage and other stages across the country. In the realm of theater, he has performed as Bobby in the stage reading of the Nacirema Society (The Detroit Players), in the ensemble for Little Shop of Horrors (University of Michigan) and has worked behind the scenes in sound design for Intiman Theatre’s Emerging Artist Program, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings (Book-It Repertory), Milk Like Sugar (ArtsWest), Hedwig & The Angry InchLady Day at Emerson Bar & Grill (Artswest) and Hamlet & As You Like It (Seattle Shakespeare). His unique artistry encourages healing and empowerment for Black and queer communities first, in hopes to one day create a more healthy, human dwelling place for all.
