Young Core Company

Developing young people as artists and citizens through outstanding experiential theater training in a context of civic engagement and community building

Young Core Company

ACT has a long history of being a home for local artists to work and grow as craftspeople and community members. The Young Core Company builds on that legacy for a new generation, cultivating a professional theatre environment in a culture of fun, inclusion, and supported risk-taking. The YCC welcomes actors, writers, directors, stage managers, and designers. We encourage each other to be fearless in pathways of creativity. Connecting artistry with civic engagement and social justice, we examine the roles and responsibilities of the artist in community, culture, and city and challenge expectations of what youth theatre looks like.

Each quarterly session culminates in a performance at ACT:

  • Fall is a showcase of compelling contemporary material, and YCC members are also invited to develop and share their artistic credo.
  • Winter builds towards a performance of an ensemble-devised play in collaboration with community partners.
  • Spring maintains momentum with youth-led artistic meetings to develop material, network and share artistic inspiration, and to read and select plays for future projects.
  • Summer is a full production process, with youth as actors, designers, and stage management teams that culminates in public performances in the Allen Theatre.

No audition necessary. Registration required. New participants are welcome to register for any session. Participation in one session does not mandate or guarantee participation in future sessions. All YCC rehearsals and performances take place at ACT Theatre in the historic Eagles Auditorium. The location is central and conveniently located at the edge of downtown directly off the freeway, easily and safely accessible by bus and transit.

The YCC is directed by Shana Bestock, with direct mentorship from ACT’s Core Company of professional artist-leaders.

YCC is YOUR place to forge and express your identity in creative community!
