G. Valmont Thomas

I first met G Val during a production of Water by the Spoonful at Theatre22, a play that deals with some very heavy material, and G Val was my scene partner. He showed me what it meant to be a professional — open and full of empathy, setting the bar for collaboration and skill in the rehearsal room. It was the first time I had felt a more experienced actor take me under their wing. At the end of the play, our characters hugged. Later, when we became CORE Company Members, he showed me what it looked like to stand up for yourself as an artist. When we did Stupid F*cking Bird, once again our characters shared a tight hug. My memories of working with G Val are so connected to those warm, tight embraces — it’s like his heart said, “I’ve got you,” and now I’m the luckiest performer in the world because I get to carry him with me through the world. G Val is to this day one of the greatest actors I have had the pleasure of both witnessing and acting with onstage. To be in his presence was to be touched by greatness. In the time I was blessed to know him, he left me with many lessons that I still carry with me today. A few good ones: learn your history to create your future, fight tooth and nail for what you believe in, and learn to play an instrument…or three, or four. His immense artistry, passion and legacy lives on in the many lives he touched as mentor, colleague, friend and family in our community.

G. Valmont Thomas appeared in A Christmas Carol (ACT), Water by the Spoonful (West of Lenin), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Tennessee Shakespeare Company), Party People (Berkeley Repertory Theatre), and The Piano Lesson (Syracuse Stage, Seattle Repertory Theatre). In the acting company of Oregon Shakespeare Festival for 13 seasons, he enjoyed playing the title character in Macbeth, Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Feste in Twelfth Night, and Lincoln in TopDog/UnderDog. On stage in 2016 in Stupid F#@*ing Bird and The Royale.

Our beloved G. Val passed away on December 18, 2017. We will be forever grateful he blessed us with his amazing gifts and we hold him in our hearts.
