Dracula marks the return of award-winning playwright Steven Dietz to ACT. Dietz’s bold adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic tale of terror and seduction will mark his twelfth production at ACT. An all-star cast of Seattle actors will join director John Langs, including five of ACT’s Core Company Members with Brandon O’Neill in the title role.

Dietz’s take on the beloved, bloodcurdling tale of good versus evil includes a surprising twist–Mina, the object of Dracula’s desire, sets out to uncover the mysterious haunting of her fiancé and the reason why her closest companion, Lucy, feels her body summoned by howls and whispers in the dark. Mina knows she must boldly challenge the ruler of the night before it’s too late. Provocative, empowering, and punctuated by wit, this foray to the dark side is soon to become a cult classic at ACT.

Artistic Director, John Langs says, “The gift of working on a classic play like Dracula is the opportunity to upend the audience’s expectations, to dance with a legendary character that everyone knows, and to create unpredictable thrills around every turn. We’re pulling out all the stops and through a year-long exploration, have found a new way to deliver this cult classic that will give our audiences the perfect Halloween treat.”

Content Advisory: Please be advised this production contains: smoke, fog, strobe lights, sexually suggestive language, references to sexual situations, violence, epic amounts of stage blood and gore, creepy crawlies, things that go bump, and the curse of the undead.

“I am delighted to revisit my established adaptation of DRACULA with a new version developed specifically for ACT Theatre. This version is subtitled “Mina’s Quest”, and it seeks to deliver all the luscious fear of the original, while making Mina – Dracula’s targeted bride – the central detective in charge. I’m eager to work with John Langs and ACT’s remarkable theatre artisans to bring this story to life in a new and thrilling way.”
—Steven Dietz

There will be plenty of good, scary fun, but also some compelling thoughts about the conflicts between faith and science, desire and fantasy, and the intellectual and sexual empowerment of women in a male-dominated society. Dietz shows us that Stoker’s novel wasn’t just a pot-boiler, and that part of its continued hold on the imagination of millions is that we recognize our own preoccupations amongst Victorian melodramatics,”
—John Langs
